PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Vanessa Gilles was recognized on the 2017 United Soccer Coaches Division I Scholar All-Region Teams. The Cincinnati senior defender earned All-North/Central Region First Team honors.
The United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-Region teams honor student-athletes for their work in the classroom and on the pitch. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a junior or senior with a minimum grade-point average of 3.3, start at least 50 percent of his or her team’s games and be “an elite player as supported by playing honors.”
Gilles, who was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team last week, has accumulated a 3.97 grade point average as a Criminal Justice major at Cincinnati. She was one of 23 selected to the Scholar All-North/Central Teams and one of just 12 honorees on the First Team. The Ottawa, Ont. native was also the lone representative of The American on the women’s side of any of the Scholar All-Region Teams.
On the pitch in 2017, Gilles scored three goals and anchored the Cincinnati defense to 11 shutouts to finish off an accomplished career for the Bearcats. As a result of her efforts on the field she earned First Team honors on the United Soccer Coaches Southeast All-Region list Nov. 29, and was selected as the conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year and also earned a spot on the All-Conference First Team for the second-consecutive year.
Gilles is now eligible for Scholar All-America Team honors that will be announced by the United Soccer Coaches Thursday.
