ECU 3, Richmond 0
After weather forced the match to be moved from Thursday evening to Friday morning, the ECU women's soccer team took care of business and beat Richmond 3-0 in Robins Stadium.
With the win, the Pirates have gone unbeaten in their first five games for only the second time in program history. The first occurred in 2017 when ECU started the season 4-0-1. ECU took control of the game with two early goals. First,
Grace Doran lofted a pass over the top of the Richmond defense that sent
Jenna Dages sprinting into the Richmond box. She was able to strike a shot with her right foot that sailed over a diving Richmond goalkeeper and into the upper right corner of the goal.
ECU continues its road trip on Sunday with a visit to George Mason. The match is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m., kickoff in George Mason Stadium.
Houston 1, California 2 (OT)
A late goal was not enough for Houston in a 2-1 loss to California Baptist in overtime at the Lancer Soccer Field Friday evening.
California Baptist got out to an early advantage, scoring inside the 23rd minute. The 1-0 advantage by the Lancers would hold until the 89th frame when Mia Brascia lined up for a free kick. Following the kick, Jazmin Grant would scramble through traffic for her second goal of the season and the tying goal to send the game into overtime. At the 96 minute mark CBU would score on a ball kicked from the right side and finishing on the far right post.
Houston will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 2 against UC Riverside. The match is scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m. Central Time.
Tulsa 1, Arkansas State 2
With just 33-seconds remaining on the clock in the first overtime period, Arkansas State's Hailey Furio headed in a score to give the Red Wolves a 2-1 win over the Tulsa women's soccer team on Friday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU fell to 1-2-1 on the season, while ASU moved to 2-0-2 overall.
Fabi Miguel, in her first game at TU, put one into the back of the net at the 36:49 mark as she drilled in an attempted clear by the Red Wolves to give the Golden Hurricane a 1-0 advantage. Sarah Sodoma evened the score in the 67th minute as she shot from five yards out off a cross from Maggie Ertl. Furio's goal was scored in the 100th minute on a rebound attempt from Ertl which hit the crossbar.
Tulsa returns to action on Sunday, September 2 against Sam Houston State. Game time is set for 2:00 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
Temple 1, Maryland 0
Temple prevailed through steady rain and slick turf conditions to earn its third straight win in a hard-fought battle against Maryland. The Owls recorded their third shutout of the season in the 1-0 win over a strong non-conference opponent.
Sophomore midfielder Emma Wilkins cut through a pack of Maryland defenders to score the lone goal of the match, her third of the season, off an assist by freshman forward Gabriela Johnson in the 37th minute. Another strong defensive effort by the Owls held the Terrapins scoreless. This is the third shutout in a row for Temple.
Temple faces Central Connecticut State at home on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 3:30 p.m. for its second game of the weekend.
