Nonconference Play Ends with Wins over LSU and Ole Miss



PROVIDENCE, R.I. –  The American Athletic Conference ended women’s soccer nonconference play in style as two of its top teams earned Power 6 victories. Cincinnati came back to defeat LSU, 2-1, and Memphis blanked Ole Miss, 2-0. Temple and UCF also picked up wins on Sunday.

Cincinnati 2, LSU 1
For the third time at home this year, Cincinnati went to the locker room at halftime trailing, 1-0. And, for the third time this year, including the second match in a row, the Bearcats battled back to claim a 2-1 victory as Jill Vetere and Julia Abbott found the back of the net to lift the hosts to the win over visiting LSU Sunday afternoon at Gettler Stadium in Cincinnati.
 
The Bearcats, who received a solid eight-save performance from goalkeeper Madison Less, moved to 5-3-1 overall this year and 5-0-1 in home matches while the Tigers fell to 6-3-0. UC is now undefeated in its last 18 home matches dating back to the 2016 season, the second-longest streak in program history.
 
UC will open American Athletic Conference play at Memphis in an 8 p.m. ET match on Thursday night. 
 
 
Temple 3, Wagner 0
Temple dominated possession and recorded its fourth shutout of the season this afternoon, defeating Wagner 3-0.

The Owls got on the board early with a Morgan Morocco goal in the sixth minute. Morocco controlled a pass from Hailey Gutowskiand found the left side of the net for her first goal of the season. Junior Jules Blank increased Temple's advantage to two in the 55th minute.  Blank beat two Seahawks' defenders, took a touch and evaded a challenge from the goalie. She went on to score for her third goal of the season.
 
The Owls travel to SMU on Thursday, Sept. 20 to take on the Mustangs at 8 p.m.
 
 
Houston 1, Colorado College 2 (OT)
Houston fell just short in a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Colorado College on Sunday afternoon.
 
In its fourth overtime match in six outings and second overtime match in a row, the Cougars fell behind early after a goal found the back of the net for Colorado College inside the 13th minute. With a mere two seconds left in the opening frame, Natalie Anderson lined up for a Houston corner kick that would be headed in by a Colorado College defender. Both teams would go into the break tied 1-1.
Inside the 101st minute Colorado College lined up for a corner kick, a header would find its way behind Samantha Cude to end the game.
 
The Cougars will return home to the Carl Lewis Complex where they will open play in the American Athletic Conference. Houston will host UConn on Sept. 20 and Temple on Sept. 23.
 
 
RV/- SMU 0, Colorado State 1
SMU fell, 1-0, on the road to Colorado State on Sunday in the final non-conference game of the regular season.

Neither team could find a goal in the first half though the Mustangs outshot the Rams, 6-4. After a change in goal to begin the second half the game stayed scoreless until a foul on the Mustangs inside the goal area was called in the 73rd minute. Colorado State senior Beth Plentl got the nod to take the Ram PK and was able to push one past Samantha Estrada. The one-goal deficit was just the second time the Mustangs have trailed in the entire eight game season.

SMU generated many chances in the final 17' looking for the game-tying goal including hitting a crossbar and having couple chances saved by CSU keeper. The Mustangs were unable to get the equalizer and dropped their second game of the season, both coming in 1-0 road contests.
 
Next up, the Mustangs begin American Athletic Conference play with a pair of home games at Westcott Field. Temple begins SMU's with a 7 p.m. contest on Thursday followed by UConn on Sunday.
 
Tulsa 0, Kansas State 3
Tulsa dropped a 3-0 decision to Kansas State on Sunday afternoon at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. 
 
Brookelyn Entz put the Wildcats on the board at the 19:26 mark as she shot from five yards out on the left side into the lower right corner off a forward pass from Megan Kalkofen. KSU took the 1-0 lead into the break.  Maddie Souder made it a two-goal cushion in the 64th minute and then Ashley Zane made it a 3-0 game at the 71:36 mark.
 
KSU outshot Tulsa, 11-0, in the first half, but TU had a 12-10 lead in shots in the second frame.  K-State finished with a 21-12 advantage in shots, including a 9-2 lead in shots on goal, and an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks.
 
Tulsa will return to action on Thursday, September 20 against ECU in the American Athletic Conference opener.  Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
 
 
UCF 5, Stetson 1
The Knights closed out non-conference play in dominant fashion with a 5-1 victory at Stetson on Sunday evening.

UCF (3-3-1) struck first against Stetson (3-4-2) on a penalty kick from Zandy Soree in the fourth minute. After the Hatters evened the score in the 10th minute, Stefanie Sanders put the Knights back on top, for good, in the 35th minute.

Sanders added a pair of second half goals to complete the hat trick, and Kristen Scott added a marker of her own in the 58th minute for the final score.
 
The Knights open American Athletic Conference action on the road at Temple on Sept. 27.
 
 
Memphis 2, Ole Miss 0
For the eighth time this season, Memphis women's soccer collected a shutout as the Tigers blanked Ole Miss 2-0 at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.  
 
The Tigers (8-1-0) set the momentum with an early goal while the defense kept the nation's best offense off the board. In goal, Elizabeth Moberg registered a pair of saves and picked up her 12th shutout of her career.
 
The Tigers struck quickly on offense, finding the game's first goal in the 4th minute. Junior Stasia Mallin sailed a deep cross to senior Marie Levasseur in the box, who lobbed it over the keeper to get Memphis on the board and take a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
 
Memphis returns to action at home on Thursday when the Tigers open conference play against Cincinnati. Kickoff from Mike Rose Soccer Complex is set for 7 p.m.
