PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The American Athletic Conference women's soccer teams picked up three more wins on Sunday as UCF, SMU and Tulsa were all victorious. The Bulls blanked Miami (Fla.), 2-0, SMU went over Houston Baptist, 2-1, and Tulsa exploded in its win, 4-1.
Sunday, September 2
ECU 1, George Mason 2
An early goal was not enough as the ECU women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to George Mason 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in George Mason Stadium.
The ECU goal came in the 13th minute and was set up by a cross. Daria Draovitch played the ball into the George Mason box from the right wing and Chentay Warnes was the first player to the ball. Her header was blocked by a Patriot defender, but the rebound fell to Jenna Dages who finished into the back of the net. Dages has now scored in three consecutive games, the first Pirate to do so since Kendall Frey scored in four straight games during the 2013 season.
The Pirates return home on Thursday night to host Campbell. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., in Johnson Stadium.
Tulsa 4, Sam Houston State 1
Mia Darden netted two goals, while Anna Williams and Valiree Morris each added a score to give the Tulsa women's soccer team a 4-1 win over Sam Houston State on Sunday afternoon at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 2-2-1 on the season, while SHSU fell to 1-3-1 overall.
Darden tallied her first goal of the season at the 7:05 mark as she drilled in a shot from two yards out off a pass from Williams to give the Golden Hurricane an early 1-0 lead that TU maintained at the break.
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, September 7 against Louisiana in the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas.
Temple 1, Central Connecticut State 3
Temple fell 3-1 to Central Connecticut Stat in a match characterized by physical play and numerous shifts in control. The Owls had several solid looks on goal, including a penalty kick in the second half, but the Blue Devils were able to hold on for the win.
Sophomore midfielder Emma Wilkins notched the sole goal for the Owls, her fourth of the season. Wilkins converted on a baseline cross from junior midfielder Morgan Morocco in the 52nd minute.
Temple will travel to Lehigh to take on the Mountain Hawks on Friday, Sept. 7 at 5 p.m.
UConn 0, Boston University 3
UConn dropped its third-straight contest on Sunday, a 3-0 defeat to the Boston University Terriers at Nickerson Field. The loss drops the Huskies to 1-5 on the season.
The Huskies could not capitalize on their opportunities. UConn earned five corner kicks and outshot the Terriers for most of the game before Boston University finished with a 16-11 edge.
The Huskies stay on the road next weekend with a pair of matchups against SEC foes in Fayetteville, Ark. UConn plays Ole Miss on Friday, Sept 7 at 4:30 p.m. and then play the Razorbacks on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m.
UCF 2, Miami (Fla.) 0
UCF turned up its intensity in the second half in a 2-0 victory over Miami at Cobb Stadium on Sunday evening.
UCF (1-2-0) started slowly against Miami (3-3-0), but went to work in the second 45 minutes to earn the victory.. Freshman Kristen Scott played a part in both goals, drawing the foul to set up the penalty kick. Junior Zandy Soree converted from the spot in the 70th minute to put the Knights up 1-0. With the seconds ticking down, the Black and Gold doubled the score as sophomore Stefanie Sanders found Scott on the breakaway.
The Knights head to Maryland for a 7 p.m. contest on Sept. 6. The game will stream on BTN2Go.
SMU 2, Houston Baptist 0
Hannah Fleet scored the go-ahead goal in the 82nd minute as SMU topped Houston Baptist, 2-1, at Westcott Field Sunday night.
In their return from a three-game road trip, the Mustangs faced off with HBU for the first meeting between the two schools in 30 years. Neither team could find anything in the first half of play though SMU held the advantage in shots.
SMU returns to Westcott Field on Sunday with anther 7 p.m. kickoff. The Mustangs square off with the Panthers of FIU in the final home non-conference contest.
Houston 0, UC Riverside 1
A goal in the 84thframe proved to be too much for the Cougars to overcome in a 1-0 loss to UC Riverside Sunday evening at the UCR Soccer Field.
UC Riverside came out strong, notching four SOG in the opening 10 minutes of action
Houston was unable to find a rhythm on offense, recording two shots throughout the game both coming in the second half.
Houston will return to action next weekend inside the friendly confines of the Carl Lewis Complex against Sam Houston State on Sept. 7 and McNeese State Sept. 9.
