MEN’S TENNIS UPDATE
UCF (6-6) extended its winning streak to five matches with wins in its first two matches last week before the streak was snapped in a 4-3 heartbreaker against No. 2 Wake Forest. UCF began the week with 4-3 wins against No. 42 Tulane and No. 36 Penn State. Freshman Bogdan Pavel continued to lead the way as he scored a straight-set win against Tulane’s Luis Erlenbusch (ranked No. 72) and delivered a key team point against Wake Forest that tied the match at 3-3. UCF’s challenging schedule continues this week with a Tuesday match against No. 4 Virginia and a Thursday date against No. 32 Texas Tech. The Knights then host South Alabama Monday.
UConn (7-8) fell in a pair of matches last week as the Huskies dropped a 7-0 decision to Temple and a 4-3 match against Delaware. The Huskies continue to fare well in doubles as the tandem of John Michael Holtmann/Jack McLister stands at 9-5 in dual matches, including a 7-3 record at No. 2. Justin Warren is the leader in singles play with an 8-6 record, primarily at the No. 5 spot. UConn heads to the state of Florida, for four matches this week - a neutral-site contest against UAB Friday, a Saturday match against Florida Atlantic and a Sunday doubleheader against Palm Beach Atlantic and Miami (Fla.).
ECU (11-3) fell 4-3 to North Florida in the Pirates’ only dual match from last week. ECU claimed the doubles point, but saw the Ospreys take four of the first five singles matches to claim the win. Javier Renones provided the highlight for ECU with a straight-set win at No. 4 singles. ECU is back in action Sunday at William & Mary.
Memphis (9-6) dropped a pair of matches against ranked opponents last week as the Tigers fell 4-0 to No. 24 Oklahoma and 4-2 to No. 32 Oklahoma State. Memphis plays a third straight ranked opponent this week as the Tigers visit No. 39 Wichita State Tuesday.
USF (7-5) enjoyed a 2-1 week as the Bulls scored a 4-3 win against No. 42 Tulane in a rematch of last year’s American Athletic Conference Championship final. The Bulls dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to No. 4 Virginia before rebounding with a 6-1 victory against George Washington. Alberto Barroso-Campos, who is ranked No. 29 in the Oracle/ITA rankings, has won his last six singles matches, including a straight-set win against Virginia’s top player, ranked No. 15 nationally. USF has three matches on this week’s docket: a Thursday trip to North Florida, a Friday match against South Alabama and a Monday home contest against Georgia State.
SMU (9-8) fell 6-1 to Rice in the Mustangs’ only action from last week. Tomas Vaise registered the lone win for SMU with a 6-1, 6-3 decision at No. 3 singles. SMU hosts a pair of midweek matches as the Mustangs welcome No. 47 Old Dominion to Dallas Wednesday before they host Loyola Marymount Thursday.
Temple (5-5) split a pair of matches against American Athletic Conference opponents last week as the Owls fell 5-2 at No. 50 Memphis, but answered with a 7-0 win at UConn. Mark Wallner won both of his singles matches last week, improving his record to 8-1. Temple will face Penn Sunday in its only match this week.
Tulane (4-10), ranked No. 42 in the Oracle/ITA rankings, was unable to snap a losing streak that has reached 10 matches after 4-3 setbacks to No. 49 UCF and USF last week. Tulane has been led by Hamish Stewart and Tyler Schick, who are both 8-4 entering this week’s action. The Green Wave hosts No. 47 Old Dominion Friday before taking on Pepperdine Sunday.
Tulsa (9-8) was idle last week. The Golden Hurricane is back in action this week with a Wednesday trip to No. 30 Oklahoma State before a home contest against Drake Saturday.
