Temple, SMU Wins Openers In Men's Tennis Championship

ORLANDO, Fla. – Temple and SMU came away with wins in the first day of competition at the American Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Championships presented by Air Force Reserve.
 
Both the Owls and Mustangs won their first-round matches by 4-0 scores at the USTA National Campus. It was SMU’s first win in the tournament since the 2016 season, while Temple scored a win in its tournament opener for the second straight season.
 
Quarterfinal-round play begins Friday at the USTA National Campus as the top six seeds play for the first time.

Temple 4, UConn 0
Records: Temple (14-6), UConn (7-15)

No. 7-seeded Temple won all three singles matches in straight sets as the Owls were 4-0 winners against UConn Thursday morning in the first round of the American Athletic Championship.
 
Temple advances in the bracket to face No. 2-seeded Tulane Friday.
 
Juan Araoz and Uladzimir Dorash won in both singles and doubles for Temple. Araoz was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at No. 6 singles and paired with Eric Biscoveanu for a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles. Dorash joined Evan Powell for a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles before closing the match with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles.
 
Mark Wallner completed the scoring for the Owls with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles.
 
 
SMU 4, ECU 0
Records: SMU (12-16), ECU (14-7)

Carles Sarrio and Huntley Allen won in both singles and doubles play to lead SMU, the No. 9 seed, to a 4-0 win against No. 8-seeded ECU Thursday morning in the first round of the American Championship.
 
Sarrio, who is ranked No. 69 in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings, was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at the No. 1 position, while Allen took a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win at No. 5. Sarrio and Allen also scored a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles, clinching the first team point of the match for the Mustangs.
 
SMU moves on to face top-seeded UCF in Friday’s quarterfinals.
