Charlotte, FIU, Memphis Advance to NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship Second Round

IRVING, Texas – Charlotte, FIU and Memphis all won their first round games on Thursday night in the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship to advance to the second round. Charlotte defeated High Point 1-0, while FIU took down Mercer by the same score. Memphis defeated previously unbeaten SIUE 2-1 in Memphis.
 
In Charlotte, Filip Jauk took a cross from Lasse Laursen in the 36th minute and headed it in past the High Point goalkeeper for the game-winning goal to put the 49ers up 1-0 just before halftime. 49ers goalkeeper Leo Stritter finished with four saves on the night to complete the clean sheet victory and move the 49ers into the second round. Charlotte advances to play at No. 9 seed Clemson on Sunday, November 19 at 6:30 p.m. ET.
 
In Miami, the Panthers used an early goal to go up 1-0 over Mercer. Simon Afrifa took a pass from Philip Hildebrandt and knocked it between two defenders for the goal. FIU goalkeeper Tyler Hogan came away with four saves against the Bears and advance to play at No. 7 seed Virginia on Sunday, November 19 at 1 p.m. ET.
 
The Tigers opened up the match with a pair of goals from American Offensive Player of the Year Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos, as the forward scored in the ninth minute and another in the 26th minute. SIUE cut into the deficit in the 60th minute with a goal from Pavel Dashin but were able to hold off the late attack to win their first NCAA Tournament match in program history. The Tigers will advance to play at No. 3 North Carolina at 5 p.m. ET on Sunday, November 19.
 
No. 6 seed SMU had a first round bye, but will host Denver on Sunday, November 19 at 8 p.m. ET following the Pioneers 2-1 win over LIU in the first round.
