Highlights
USF moved to the No. 1 spot in league standings, while Cincinnati and Tulane also started their respective series with wins on Friday. No. 25 UCF and UConn’s series opener was postponed due to inclement weather and will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at Noon ET. No. 11 ECU split its doubleheader at Washington in nonconference action.
- The bats came alive early on for Tulane, as the Green Wave surged for 11 runs in the second inning en route to a 19-4 seven-inning series opener win at Wichita State. Eleven consecutive Green Wave batters reached safely in the second frame, as the team used nine hits and three errors to do its damage. It marked the third straight week Tulane has captured a conference Game 1 win. The Green Wave led with 17 hits, as eight batters enjoyed a multi-hit game, led by outfielder Grant Witherspoon who went 3-for-6 with two runs scored, a RBI and a double. Catcher Acy Owens and first baseman Trevor Jensen each drove in three runs. The Shockers committed seven errors, as eight of its runs allowed were unearned. The series resumes tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET.
- After giving up a two-run homer in the opening inning, Cincinnati scored 10 unanswered runs to take Game 1, 10-2. The Bearcats had three-runs spurts in the second, fourth and eighth innings. Starter J.T. Perez and right-hander Clayton Colvin kept the Tigers scoreless through the final eight innings. Game 2 starts at 4 p.m. ET.
- USF tacked on five runs in the fourth inning and held onto a 9-6 win over Houston to take Game 1 of the series to take the sole No. 1 spot in The American standings. Both teams entered the game at the top of the league standings. Game 2 is set for 7:30 p.m. ET tomorrow. He Bulls’ first baseman Joe Genord had a 3-for-5 night with two RBIs, while southpaw starter Shane McClanahan tossed 6.2 innings and fanned eight batters.
- ECU split a day-night double-header against Washington getting a 5-1 win in Game 1 before falling 8-0 in the second contest. The rubber game is set for 4:05 p.m. ET on Saturday. Tied at 1-1 in the series opener, the Pirates scored the final four unanswered runs to take the win. Outfielder Dwanya Williams-Sutton gave the Pirates a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning of Game 1, belting his first home run of the season to right field.
